ASEAN asserts belief of free region of nuclear weapons

(MENAFN) The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has reaffirmed its unified stance against the presence of nuclear weapons in the region, underscoring its continued support for the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty.

Speaking at the SEANWFZ Commission meeting, held on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related events, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan emphasized that nuclear arms have no place in Southeast Asia.

He reiterated ASEAN’s ongoing commitment to advancing the peaceful application of nuclear science, in line with the principles of the SEANWFZ Treaty and the broader goals of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

“ASEAN has made significant strides in advancing the peaceful uses of nuclear technology, particularly through ongoing cooperation with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in the fields of agriculture, medical diagnostics, food technologies, among others,” Mohamad said.

The regional bloc continues to stress the importance of maintaining Southeast Asia as a zone free from nuclear threats while promoting responsible and beneficial uses of nuclear technology for development and public welfare.
