India’s Wholesale Price Inflation Slips to Lowest in 21 Months

(MENAFN) India’s wholesale price index (WPI) slipped into negative territory in June, registering a decline of -0.13 percent, according to data released Monday by the federal Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

This figure marks the lowest WPI inflation rate in 21 months and the first time since October 2023 that the index recorded a negative value.

"The annual rate of inflation based on All India WPI number is -0.13 percent (provisional) for the month of June 2025 (over June 2024)," reads a statement issued by the ministry.

The contraction in inflation during June 2025 is largely attributed to falling prices in categories such as food articles, mineral oils, basic metals manufacturing, crude petroleum, and natural gas, the statement explained.

For context, the WPI inflation rate stood at 0.39 percent in May and was finalized at 0.85 percent in April.

As a key gauge of price movements in the wholesale market, WPI inflation is influenced significantly by sharp global shifts in commodity prices, driving its rise or fall.
