China Condemns UK's Record Sanctions Targeting Russia
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning declared that China "consistently opposes unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law or authorization from the UN Security Council," according to a state-run news agency.
Her sharp rebuke followed Tuesday's announcement by the UK of nearly 300 new punitive measures — described by London as its "biggest" sanctions package to date. The sweeping action takes direct aim at Russia's critical revenue streams, including its energy sector, and military supply chains.
A UK Foreign Office statement confirmed the measures represent the largest single sanctions package of the conflict, ensnaring 49 entities and individuals. Targets include international suppliers of Russian drones, components, and technology, as well as key players operating within Russia's liquefied natural gas sector. Per the news agency, the package also extends to individuals and enterprises based in Iran, China, and the United Arab Emirates.
Beijing pushed back swiftly. Mao conveyed China's "strong dissatisfaction with the relevant actions of the British side," insisting the country has remained "committed to promoting peace talks" throughout the Ukraine crisis.
"The normal exchanges and cooperation between China and Russia should not be interfered with or affected. China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate and lawful rights and interests," Mao said.
The war, which erupted on Feb. 24, 2022, has claimed thousands of civilian and combatant lives while displacing millions across the Ukraine-Russia border region.
